Digital Drawing

Die einzelnen Partituren bilden zusammen die Soundmalerei „In Search of a New Continent“.

The work was developed in the context of the exhibition “Was wird (What will happen?)” and develops Soundmalerei from an open, collective situation of movement. A door-object made from former exhibition flyers functions as a Soundmalerei instrument. When visitors move the door, drawn traces emerge on paper laid on the floor. The Sounds produced in the process were also recorded.
The movement of the door and the lines generated by it form an open cartography of what is becoming. A future structure that is not determined solely by the artist, but emerges through the interplay of place, visitors, movement, and time.
The resulting drawing is then digitally fragmented and reassembled from its individual lines. In parallel, the recorded sounds are segmented, selected, and rearranged. From these two processes of transformation emerges “In Search of a New Continent”, a digital drawing that also functions as a score for the Soundmalerei.
Individual Soundmalerei scores are developed from the overall score. The lines contained within them correspond to specific sonic sequences and are presented as individual sound structures. Together, the individual scores form the Soundmalerei “In Search of a New Continent”.
Drawing and sound thus emerge from the same process of movement, yet are independently fragmented and reassembled. The work investigates how a single action can simultaneously generate a visual and an acoustic structure, and how, through transformation, the two can once again be brought into a shared form.
